Telephone scam spreading through Talladega County

SHARE NOW

TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. – A phone scam is going around affecting current and former citizens of of the surrounding area, and the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) wants to alert people to this fact.

The scam call has been reported a multitude of times, and the caller makes the phony claim that the Talladega County member has “missed federal court jury duty” with an issued citation.

The scammer then claims that the individual needs to be detained for potentially up to 12 hours or pay a fine as an alternative.

The TCSO wants to stress that this is clearly a scam as it doesn’t follow their typical guidelines such as:

Calling someone to inform that he/she has a warrant
Calling to ask someone to pay a fine
Asking individuals over the phone for personal information
Setting up an in-person meet

The advice from the TCSO to deal with the scam is to “hang up and not return calls from any number that is left on your voicemail.”
