TALLADEGA, Ala. – Talladega College will celebrate the legacy of the historic Amistad Murals with a two-day event on Friday and Saturday, June 5-6 at the Dr. William R. Harvey Museum.
The event, themed “Art and Legacy in Motion: Amistad Murals – The Next Chapter,” will feature discussions on art, history, and community, as well as the murals’ impact on education, culture, and artistic expression.
According to Talladega College, the theme reflects a renewed commitment to preserving and elevating the murals while engaging broader audiences in conversations about Black history, identity, and the arts.
College officials said the murals tell a powerful story of liberation, resistance, courage, and human dignity. Created by renowned artist Hale Woodruff between 1938 and 1941, the Amistad Murals are considered among the nation’s most significant works of African American art and history. The murals were commissioned for Talladega College’s newly constructed Savery Library in 1938.
Activities are scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on June 5 and from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on June 6. The event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.
