SYLACAUGA, Ala. – As communities across the country prepare to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary, Sylacauga is embracing the milestone through a series of public art displays, educational programs, and patriotic celebrations designed to highlight both American history and the city’s local heritage.
Recognized as an official America 250 Alabama community, Sylacauga has launched several projects involving local schools, businesses, civic organizations, and residents in anticipation of the semiquincentennial celebration in 2026.
One of the most visible efforts can be found throughout downtown, where fire hydrants have been transformed into red, white, and blue-themed works of art.

Organized through the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, the project has brought together volunteers and community groups to add patriotic designs and creative flair to public spaces across the Marble City.
Another centerpiece of the celebration is a newly completed mural painted on the side of The Corner Spot at the intersection of Norton Ave. and 1st St. The large-scale artwork was created by Leadership Sylacauga’s Class of 2026 as a class initiative honoring America’s 250th anniversary.
The mural combines national themes with imagery tied to Sylacauga’s identity and history, blending patriotic symbolism with references to the city’s longstanding connection to marble production and community pride. City leaders say the installation is intended to serve as a lasting downtown attraction for both residents and visitors.
America 250 flags have also been raised at several locations across the city, including Sylacauga City Hall, the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, Sylacauga City Schools, and B.B. Comer Memorial School. The displays recognize the community’s participation in the statewide America 250 Alabama initiative.
Local schools are also expected to play a significant role in the celebration. Both Talladega County Schools and Sylacauga City Schools have been designated as Semiquincentennial Schools, a recognition tied to efforts promoting civic engagement, historical education, and community involvement.
Programs planned through the initiative include educational activities, history exhibits, veteran recognition events, and other projects aimed at encouraging residents to reflect on the nation’s past and future.
“America’s 250th anniversary gives Sylacauga the opportunity to celebrate our local story while reflecting on the values that unite us as a nation,” said Laura Strickland, President and CEO of the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce. “Throughout 2026, America 250 activities will be incorporated into city events and special programming across the community.”

Additional events and community projects are expected to be announced in the coming months, and local organizations, businesses, and residents are being encouraged to participate in the ongoing celebration.
The next major event connected to the initiative will be Star Spangled Sylacauga on Friday, June 26 at Central Park. The free public event, presented by Coosa Pines Federal Credit Union, will feature food vendors, activities for families, patriotic entertainment, and a fireworks show scheduled to begin at sundown.
Central Park will open to attendees at 5:00 p.m.
