SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Isabel Anderson Comer Museum and Arts Center will celebrate the life and legacy of Sylacauga native Jim Nabors with a birthday bash on Friday and Saturday, June 12-13, honoring what would have been the entertainer’s 96th birthday.
The event will take place at the museum, located on N. Broadway Ave. in Sylacauga, and will feature videos and music highlighting Nabors’ career and contributions to entertainment.
A special gathering is planned for noon on Saturday, June 13, when attendees will be served some of Nabors’ favorite desserts made from recipes passed down from his mother.
Museum officials are also inviting the public to send birthday cards, which will be displayed in Nabors’ gallery.
Born June 12, 1930, in Sylacauga, James Thurston “Jim” Nabors attended the University of Alabama before launching a successful career in television, music, and entertainment. He became a household name through his portrayal of Gomer Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show” and later on the spinoff series “Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.”
In addition to his acting career, Nabors was widely recognized for his rich singing voice and patriotic performances. He died in 2017, but remains one of Sylacauga’s most celebrated native sons.
The birthday celebration is open to the public.
