SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Police Department today arrested 31-year-old Melissa Carol Chewning for two counts of Aggravated Child Abuse.

The charges stemmed from incidents in April involving a child under 18 years of age. An investigation began this month based on witness reports and evidence.

Bond was set at $50,000 per count, and Chewning, whose address was listed as the Jackson Trace Motel, is currently being held in the Talladega County Jail until bail is set by the courts.

Aggravated Child Abuse is a Class “C” Felony, punishable upon conviction by up to 10 years in prison.
