Retrial looming for Sylacauga dog trainer accused of animal cruelty

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Dylan Shotwell, a Sylacauga-based dog trainer, faces a retrial next week following allegations of animal cruelty and abuse at his facility, Iron Grip Training.

Previous reports revealed harrowing stories from multiple dog owners, including instances of pets suffering, dying, and being subjected to torture.

One owner, Mrs. Denise Boyce, found her German Shepherd, Gunner, dead with signs of abuse. Kathy Hammonds shared another ordeal involving her dog, Laser, allegedly poisoned with THC during training.

Following the initial hearing’s dismissal in June of 2023, Shotwell, who also allegedly operated in six other states, now sees a retrial scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 8-9.

Notably, Alabama lacks licensing requirements for dog trainers, though certifications are available.

Allegations against Shotwell prompted recusals with the case now expected to be heard by Talladega County Circuit Judge Chad Woodruff.
