GULF SHORES, Ala. – Corbyn Patterson closed his high school career with the kind of finish athletes replay in their heads long after the season ends.

The Sylacauga senior broke through on the biggest stage Friday, winning the Class 5A 400-meter state championship at the AHSAA State Meet in Gulf Shores with a time of 48.87. It was a personal best by nearly three seconds, delivered when it mattered most.

Running out of lane 7, Patterson didn’t have the cleanest draw on the track. But he stayed composed through the first half of the race, kept himself in contact, and steadily closed down the stretch.

It came down to the final meters. Step for step down the line, Patterson leaned at the finish and won by 0.02 seconds to secure the state title.

What followed wasn’t immediate celebration. After crossing the finish, having given it everything he had, Patterson needed attention on the track before eventually returning for the podium, where the moment finally set in.

One last race. One last push. A state championship to close it out.

Corbyn Patterson finished his Sylacauga career the way every sprinter hopes to, first across the line when it mattered most.
