SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga Police Department is warning residents about a recent phone scam in which a caller falsely claimed to be Police Chief Rondell Muse.
According to the department, a resident recently received a phone call that appeared to originate from “The City of Sylacauga” using the police department’s former phone number, (256) 245-4334. During the call, the individual identified himself as Chief Muse and claimed there was an issue involving the resident’s account.
The resident recognized the call as suspicious and immediately ended the conversation.
Police officials emphasized that Chief Muse does not personally contact residents regarding scams, bank accounts, payments, or other financial matters. The department also stated that it will never request money, banking information, gift cards, or personal account details over the phone.
Authorities said scammers can use a technique known as “spoofing” to make phone numbers appear legitimate, even when the call is fraudulent.
Residents who receive suspicious phone calls are encouraged not to provide personal information, to hang up immediately, and to contact the Sylacauga Police Department through official channels to verify the legitimacy of the call.
The department is asking residents to share the warning with family members, friends, and neighbors to help prevent others from becoming victims of scams.
