SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council will meet on Tuesday, June 16, with board appointments, a public hearing on a proposed grant-funded project, and several board nominations among the items scheduled for consideration.
Board appointment interviews will begin at 4:00 p.m. for vacancies on the Parks and Recreation Board, Commercial Development Authority, and Historical Commission. City officials noted that interviews could extend into the start of the council’s work session.
The council’s work session is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. in the Faye Hosey Chambers, with the regular council meeting to follow immediately afterward.
Due to a required public hearing, the first item under Old Business will take place at 6:00 p.m. The hearing will include presentations from Elizabeth Harkert of the East Alabama Regional Development Planning Commission and Sam Serio of Goodwin Mills Cawood regarding a proposed project tied to the City of Sylacauga’s application for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG).
Residents will have an opportunity to comment on the proposed project during the public hearing. The council’s vote would relate to accepting the proposed project for inclusion in the grant application. Funding would only become available if the city is awarded the grant.
Also under Old Business, council members will consider overriding Mayor Matt Hubbard’s veto of Resolution 52-2026. The resolution would require department heads to attend all city council work sessions.
The council is also scheduled to vote on a resolution declaring various pieces of police equipment as surplus property.
In addition, council members will nominate and appoint a new member to the Sylacauga Board of Education and a new member to the Sylacauga Utilities Board.
Under New Business, the council is expected to approve a two-step educational pay raise for Animal Control Officer Brandon Gerrins for earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. The increase would be effective as of the date of Saturday, June 13.
The council will also consider approval of fiscal year 2026 accounts payable invoices and May 2026 payrolls.
An executive session is scheduled to take place at the conclusion of the meeting.
