[WATCH] Sylacauga City Council holds May 7 meeting

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council held a meeting on Tuesday night, May 7, at 6:00 p.m. with a work session prior at 5:00 p.m.

At the meeting, public hearings were conducted to consider rezoning property located on Chappell St. from AG-1 (Residential-Agricultural) district and placing it in an R-2 (Medium Density Residential) district as well as to consider the assessment of costs by the City of Sylacauga for abatement of nuisance structure and weeds located at 500 W Spring St.

The council approved Resolution No. 58-2024 to record abatement costs of $3,758.43 for property located at 500 W Spring St. in order for said costs to be recorded as lien against property at the Office of Talladega County Probate Judge.

Authorization was given for the City’s participation in the Back-to-School Tax Holiday and the Severe Weather Preparedness Tax Holiday.

Mayor Jim Heigl was authorized to sign the amended FY24 South Talladega County ARC contract in the amount of $32,750, the amended FY24 Industrial Development Board contract in the amount of $50,000, and the FY24 Commercial Development Authority contract in the amount of $30,000.

The city council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with SHRI AKSHAR LLC for a proposed hotel development.

The council authorized the $94.01 hearing and publication of notice related to the Amended and Restated Development Agreement with Wharf Casual Seafood Sylacauga, LLC.

They repealed Resolution No. 13-2023 and amended a contract due to increase in costs. Local match amount of $784 payable to East Alabama. (Original cost in Spring 2023 was $92,489; match was 80/20, Sylacauga paid $18,600, Sylacauga responsible for insuring the van.)

The following FY24 additional expenses were approved:

Board of Education appropriation to add $319,000
Network Expense to add $80,000
Transportation Contract to add $32,915
Library appropriation to add $35,156
ARC appropriation to add $2,750
Airport Authority to add $18,850
Industrial Development Board contract to add $20,000
Commercial Development Authority contract to add $10,000
Historical Commission to add $750
Sylacauga Parks and Recreation appropriation to add $77,846.40

The council included a temporary, ten percent pay increase for the current Court Magistrate and Assistant Court Clerk to be paid from the Unused Salaries fund until Sept. 30, 2024.

They provided additional funding for contracts and entities in the amount of $624,415.

Additionally, they approved Karen Tampling’s Special Event License for a Community Summer Kick-Off event on June 1, 2024 along with Stephanie McGregor’s Special Event License for a Back to School Summer Bash event on July 13, 2024.

The city council approved Fiscal Year 2023 Accounts Payable invoices in the amount of $1,886.70 and Fiscal Year 2024 Accounts Payable invoices in the amount of $540,139.11.

The next Sylacauga City Council meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 21, at 6:00 p.m.
