Childersburg Water, Sewer, and Gas Board’s annual public awareness day takes place at Kiwanis Park

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – On Friday, Oct. 4, the Childersburg Water, Sewer, and Gas Board held their annual public awareness celebration.

The annual event is held to give back to the customers and city, but, most importantly, it is meant to educate the general public on what to do in the event of a natural gas leak, water leak, or any other form of service accident.

The public was treated to lunch right next to the board’s office at the Kiwanis Park in downtown Childersburg. Everyone was served hot dogs, chips, popcorn, cold drinks, and a nice gift bag that included several items to use around the house as well as notes and numbers in which to call in the event of an emergency.

Travis Mizzell, General Manager of the Water, Sewer, and Gas Board, said, “This event is very important to our city and surrounding areas to educate the public on what to do and what not to do in the event of a natural gas leak or any other emergency that the department needs to be aware of. This day is a collective effort on the part of all of our employees and city officials to make it a success.

Natural gas safety is heavily educated in the city. Questions arise such as knowing where pipelines are located, calling before you dig anywhere, and knowing how to detect a gas leak.

Would you know what to do in the case of a natural gas leak? This question is answered in all of the literature that the Childersburg Works, Sewer, and Gas Board distributed in all of the material that the public received.

“I know our customers and public appreciates the celebration, but the main goal of our department is to educate everyone on public safety when it comes to all of our services,” Mizzell added.
