CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – Several measures approved during Tuesday’s City Council meeting on Aug. 18 will allow Hawk Plastics to move forward with a $4.22 million expansion project expected to create 30 new jobs.
Acting in its capacity as the Childersburg Land Redevelopment Authority, the council approved Resolution 2026-24, granting Alabama Power a right-of-way easement for the installation and maintenance of electrical power transmission, distribution, and communications infrastructure. The resolution also authorizes Mayor Ken Wesson, chairman of the Childersburg Land Redevelopment Authority, to execute the easement agreement.
The council also approved Resolution 2026-26, authorizing a 10-year tax abatement submitted by SAGA Manufacturing, doing business as Hawk Plastics, for an addition to its existing facility. The expansion is estimated to cost $4.22 million.
Resolution 2026-25 authorizes the city to declare four transportation department vehicles as surplus property. The vehicles are no longer needed for public or municipal use and will be disposed of through a program administered by the East Alabama Regional Planning Commission.
Council members approved the hiring of Kaylyn Liner as a part-time temporary library clerk at Rainwater Library at a rate of $8.50 per hour.
The council also approved payment of invoices totaling $250,949.08.
Mayor Ken Wesson announced that Thursday night’s high school football season opener, a longtime regional tradition, will be played at the original John Cox Stadium as a tribute to the return of the historic rivalry that for decades marked the beginning of the local football season.
Wesson also reported that engineering work has been completed for grant-funded road improvements in the industrial park designed to support expanding industries. Construction is expected to begin soon. During the project, access will be restricted with First Rd. serving as the primary route for traffic associated with Hawk Plastics, Super Rock, and Cooper Steel South.
The next regular council meeting is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, and will be preceded by a work session at 5:30 p.m.
