SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Three years ago Pinecrest Elementary School embarked on a special reading project creating an all-school book club called One School, One Book.
On Wednesday, an assembly was held to reveal which book students would be reading for the next three weeks. Following a “big reveal” presentation, every student received a copy of Almost Super by Marion Jensen. Not only will students be reading this book, so will all Pinecrest teachers and staff members, as well as school district staff.
Students are encouraged to do the daily reading assignments at home with parents.
“Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares students to be effective readers,” said principal Julie Green. “It is also a fun, worthwhile family activity.”
With the One School, One Book program, Pinecrest aims to build a community of readers and promote literacy and learning. During the presentation, Green said that, so far this school year, Pinecrest students have read 10,356 books, totaling 37,175,063 words. She added that three students have already reached the goal of 100 points this year. For more information on One School, One Book, please visit the Sylacauga City Schools Facebook page.
