SYLACAUGA, Ala. – According to recently released 2020 Census data, Alabama’s population grew by 2.8% from 2010-2020.
The population of only 25 counties grew, three were unchanged, and 39 declined. Although most changes were relatively small, the largest population increases were in Limestone, Baldwin, Madison, Lee, and Shelby Counties while the largest decreases were in Dallas, Calhoun, and Montgomery Counties.
In Sylacauga, the new population count of 12,578 people represents 7,513 white (59.7%), 4,323 black or African-American (34.4%), and 280 (2.2%) Hispanic or Latino residents. That’s an increase of 4.3% over the Census Bureau’s 2019 estimates and a decrease of 1.34% compared to the 12,749 recorded in the 2010 Census, meaning a loss of 171 people over the past decade. Still, this means Sylacauga is the state’s 60th largest city/town/place of the 593 enumerated in the Census.
Childersburg’s numbers: 4,754 residents, down 8.1% from 5,175, made up of 2,615 white (55.1%), 1,936 black or African American (40.7%), and 74 (1.6%) Hispanic or Latino residente.
Cities have populations of 12,000-plus, while towns have less.
