ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. – Russell Lands Inc. has announced the passing of Chairman of the Board Benjamin “Ben” Russell, a lifelong Alexander City resident whose leadership helped transform the company into a major development and recreation enterprise while shaping philanthropy and community life across Alabama.
Russell’s tenure spanned more than five decades and centered on the growth and stewardship of Lake Martin. Company President David Sturdivant said Russell’s vision defined the organization’s direction and culture.
“Ben’s vision and passion were the driving forces behind everything we do at Russell Lands,” Sturdivant said in a statement. “He was more than a chairman; he was a mentor, a community champion, and a true visionary. While we mourn his loss, we are incredibly proud to celebrate his life and remain committed to honoring his remarkable legacy by continuing to build upon the foundation and values he established over the last half-century.”
After attending the University of Alabama and Mercer University, Russell began his career at Russell Corporation, the textile company founded by his grandfather in 1902. He was named president of Russell Lands in 1970, overseeing a small company focused primarily on cabin maintenance and timber. Under his leadership, the organization expanded into a multi-faceted enterprise employing more than 900 people.
Russell guided development across roughly 25,000 acres and 250 miles of shoreline, creating more than a dozen waterfront communities. Operations grew to include Russell Marine, multiple building supply stores, and Willow Point Golf & Country Club. His later projects included Russell Crossroads – home to Catherine’s Market, SpringHouse, The Stables, and Fanny’s – as well as The Heritage, a 1,500-acre residential community anchored by Wicker Point Golf Club.
His commitment to land stewardship included environmental initiatives dating to the 1970s, when he created the ECON Company to develop alternative wood energy, replacing millions of gallons of fuel oil with waste wood. He also pursued historic preservation projects, including restoring a grist mill powered by a 35-foot water wheel.
Russell also was widely recognized for philanthropy. In 1989, he and his wife, Luanne, founded Children’s Harbor on Lake Martin to support families of chronically ill children. The effort expanded to Birmingham and was later honored with the dedication of the Benjamin Russell Hospital for Children in 2012 following a $25 million family gift. In 2021, the couple donated another $25 million to Russell Medical in Alexander City to fund geriatric care initiatives and a new senior living community.
Russell is survived by his wife, Luanne; daughter Dedie and her husband, Bill; and grandson Benjamin and his wife, Allie.
Russell Lands officials said the company will continue pursuing the long-term vision Russell established, emphasizing responsible development, land stewardship, and community support around Lake Martin.
