A truly special feature of Sylacauga’s annual Magic of Marble Festival is the visiting artist from Italy

SYLACAUGA, Ala, – This year’s visiting sculptor from Pietrasanta, Italy is Georg Vikter. (Yes, that’s how it’s spelled.) He’s sort of a mix between your best friend and a grumpy old man. He works slower than most of our Italian friends, preferring the hammer and chisel, but still uses the power tools for details.

He speaks and understands English better than most, and likes to strike up conversations with onlookers. Those usually start with his warning.

“Step back a bit. I make marble fly with this,” as he waves his chisel at you with a big smile.

Come on out and meet Georg. He promises to be a crowd favorite as he creates his version of a minotaur in marble.

The Magic of Marble Festival continues through Saturday, April 18 with complete information on all the related activities on-site in Sylacauga’s Central Park, under the green tent, manned by informative volunteers, as well as inside the B.B. Comer Memorial Library.
