MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) has released a new ad campaign to notify drivers of continuous road work zones and the penalties involved if you do not drive carefully in those areas.
“Not a game.” That is the tagline message for the PSA campaign started by Drive Safe Alabama in coordination with ALDOT and the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
The consequences for being unsafe in these work zones are substantial. The amendments to the construction zone law went into effect on July 1 after an uptick of work zone deaths to both workers and motorists in 2020. Now, if one commits any traffic violation in a zone where there are present workers, you will receive a fine of $250 or the fine will be doubled depending on which total is higher.
“We want drivers to be aware not only of the new fines in a work zone, but of the people who are putting their lives at great risk to keep Alabama roads in good condition,” said Allison Green, Drive Safe Alabama Coordinator with ALDOT. “Driving through a work zone is not a game, and our new PSA highlights some of the violations that will result in double fines and could cost a road worker their life.”
Drive Safe Alabama has posted tips for how to operate your vehicle carefully in a work zone. This includes giving extra space where available to allow the construction workers to proceed with their duties and keeping a fair distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you.
