TALLADEGA COUNTY, Ala. – According to a press release from the Talladega County Commission, Talladega County has joined Alabama’s 66 other counties in making significant investments in public safety during Fiscal Year 2026. Revenue from the state’s Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) has served as an important funding source amid rising operating costs.
Since 2015, the SSUT program has required eligible out-of-state sellers to collect and remit use tax on purchases made by Alabama consumers.
The revenue is distributed among state, county, and municipal governments and has become an important source of funding for essential county services, particularly law enforcement.
Talladega County officials highlighted the importance of online sales tax revenue in funding sheriff’s deputies, jail operations, and other public safety needs.
The Association of County Commissions of Alabama notes that SSUT revenue is the only growing source of revenue for counties. The association also reports that law enforcement and county jail operations represent the largest combined expenditure in every county.
