TALLADEGA, Ala. – Talladega College will celebrate the legacy of the historic Amistad Murals with a two-day event, set for June 5-6th.

The event at the Dr. William R. Harvey Museum will feature conversations on art, history and community, including the effect of the murals on art, education and culture.

According to Talladega College, the event’s theme, “Art and Legacy in Motion: Amistad Murals: The Next Chapter,” reflects a renewed commitment to preserving and elevating the murals while engaging broader audiences in conversations surrounding Black history, identity and artistic expression.

Talladega College officials said the murals tell a profound story of liberation, resistance, courage and human dignity. They were created by renowned artist Hale Woodruff between 1938 and 1941, the Amistad Murals stand among the country’s most significant works of African American art and history. They were commissioned for Talladega College’s newly constructed Savery Library in 1938.

Activities are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 5 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 6. They are free and open to the public but registration is required. For additional information and registration details, visit www.talladega.edu.
