[WATCH] Sylacauga City Council holds first meeting in July

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council convened Thursday evening, July 7, at 6:00 p.m. for its first meeting of the month.

At the meeting, the council held public hearings for seven abatements of nuisance. All hearings were closed without answers, and the the following properties will be addressed accordingly:

– 1503 Fairmont Rd.
– 100 E 8 St.
– 108 E 8 St.
– 811 N Main Ave.
– 809 N Main Ave.
– 807 N Main Ave.
– 805 N Main Ave.

The city council authorized an agreement with EEFS for paving of city’s portion of Marble City Heights Circle.

Also, they authorized a contract for repairs to city’s right-of-way primary drainage canal at Coosa Valley Nursing Home to the Bob Smith Construction Co. with a low bid of $480,550.

The council approved the request of court clerk Amber Johns to hire new court magistrates Ginger McDonough and Samantha Armstrong at Grade A01, Step 1.

Additionally, the council reappointed Angel Harris to the Historical Commission for a term that expires March 2025.

They authorized the Sylacauga Historical Commission to apply for grant funding through the Alabama Historical Commission of up to $1,000 for cemetery markers.

The city council approved travel and training expenses for Firefighter Harmony Kelley to attend the Alabama Fire College Rescue Technician: Rope I course hosted by the Oxford Fire Department, Aug. 1-5, 2022. No registration fee; expenses for lunches and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Kelley are $75.

They approved travel and training expenses for Firefighter Caleb Williams to attend the Alabama Fire College Rescue Technician: Surface Water I and II courses and the Swift Water I and II courses hosted by Prattville Regional Training Center, Aug. 1-5, 2022. Registration fee for the Surface Water courses is $240; registration for the Swift Water courses is $180. Expenses for lunches and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Williams are $495.

They also approved travel and training expenses for Fire Chief Nate Osgood and Fire Inspector Chad Toland to attend the Alabama Fire College FD Safety Officer: Health and Safety Officer course hosted by the Anniston Regional Training Center, Aug. 1-5, 2022. No registration fee; expenses for lunches and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Osgood and Toland are $75 each.

In addition, they approved travel and training expenses for Fire Inspector Chad Toland to attend the Alabama Fire College FD Safety Officer: Incident Safety Officer course hosted by the Anniston Regional Training Center, July 25-29, 2022. No registration fee; expenses for meals and use of a city-provided vehicle will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Toland are $75.

The council approved travel and training expenses for new court magistrates Ginger McDonough and Samantha Armstrong to attend the 2022 Municipal Magistrates’ Orientation in Montgomery on the following dates: July 8, July 15, July 22, July 29, and August 5. Registration fee of $250 each; additional expenses for mileage will be incurred. Employees will carpool. Total estimated expenses for McDonough are $620; estimated expenses for Armstrong are $250.

Lastly, the city council accepted accounts payable received to date for June in the amount of $86,832.13.

The council held interviews for the Utilities Board at 4:30 p.m. before heading into a work session around 5:00 p.m.

The next Sylacauga City Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 19, at 6:00 p.m.
