Sylacauga City Council approves CDBG application, makes board appointments

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council met Tuesday, June 16, in the Faye Hosey Chambers at City Hall following board appointment interviews and a work session.

During Old Business, the council conducted a public hearing before approving the proposed paving project included in the city’s application for the Fiscal Year 2027 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The approval includes a local funding match of $53,625, which will only be allocated if the city is awarded the grant.

The council voted 3-2 concerning overriding Mayor Matt Hubbard’s veto of Resolution 52-2026. The resolution requires all city department heads to attend city council work sessions.

In board appointments, the council appointed Kermit Baumgartner III to the Sylacauga Board of Education for a five-year term set to expire in June 2031.

The council also reappointed Brad Porch to the Sylacauga Utilities Board for a six-year term ending in July 2032.

Additionally, council members declared certain Police Department equipment as surplus property and authorized its disposal.

Under New Business, the council approved a two-step educational pay increase for Animal Control Officer Brandon Gerrins, who recently earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. The increase is effective June 13, 2026.

The council also approved accounts payable invoices for Fiscal Year 2026 totaling $680,849.02.

May 2026 payrolls totaling $525,213.04 were also approved.
