OAK GROVE, Ala. – Mayor Tony White updated the Oak Grove Town Council this week on bids for the town’s next street paving project. The town is currently accepting bids for the project, which has a pre-bid estimated cost of $314,883.

The town has secured grants totaling $250,000, leaving a local match of $8,425 and additional related costs of $48,033. Sealed bids will be opened at 10:00 a.m. on Aug. 3 and presented to the council for approval during its regular meeting on Aug. 11.

In other business, the council approved the appointments of Jonathan Reed Packer, Hannah Joy Smith, and Kevin Curtis Vines as new members of the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department. Fire Chief Luke Lunsford outlined the department’s training process for new members, regardless of their previous firefighting or emergency medical services experience.

The council also discussed Resolution 657, which outlined proposals for eight-yard garbage container service under a three-year contract. Council members approved a bid from Republic Services at a cost of $186.59 per month.

No action was taken on Resolution 658, which concerned roll-off container rental and hauling services. Instead, the council opted for a temporary proposal from Peoples Sanitation to haul items collected by the Street Department. Officials said the council will review additional internal options once expense details are finalized.

The council approved expenses for the Public Works director to attend the 2026 Alabama Public Works Association Summer Meeting.

Council members also approved job descriptions for the positions of town clerk, assistant town clerk, and full-time receptionist/clerk assistant.

The council voted to change internet service providers for Town Hall, switching from Charter Communications to fiber-optic broadband service provided by the Sylacauga Utilities Board.

According to the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department’s June 2026 report, the department responded to 43 medical calls, representing 59 percent of its total call volume. Other responses included two structure fires, two brush or woods fires, three other fire incidents, nine motor vehicle accidents, six fire alarms, and eight other calls for service.

The department provided mutual aid to neighboring agencies eight times and received mutual aid on three occasions. Of the department’s total calls, 17 occurred within the Oak Grove town limits, accounting for 23 percent of responses, while 56 calls, or 77 percent, occurred outside the town limits.
