COLUMBIANA, Ala. – Seven new building permits have recently been issued across Alabama for construction projects valued at more than $1 million in the Birmingham metropolitan area, Huntsville, and Auburn. The largest project is a $440 million data center conversion in Columbiana.
The project will transform an existing facility, formerly used as a bitcoin mining center, into a Tier Three data center designed to support high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads.
U.S. Data Centers, a subsidiary of Digihost Technology Inc., is leading the redevelopment of its Columbiana facility. The project will be completed in two phases and is expected to provide a total capacity of 55 megawatts.
The first phase, scheduled for completion in 2026, will deliver 22 megawatts of high-performance computing capacity and require an investment of $176 million.
The second phase, expected to be completed in early 2027, will add 33 megawatts, bringing the total project investment to $440 million. The development will be financed primarily through debt, supported by anticipated future revenue.
A $7 million building permit has been issued to Dunn Building Co. for work associated with the project.
