SYLACAUGA, Ala. – On Wednesday, Feb. 1, the B.B. Comer Memorial Library’s Brown Bag Lecture Series will start again with guest speaker Matthew Downs.
Sponsored by First Bank of Alabama, the Brown Bag Lecture Series takes place on Wednesdays at 12:00 p.m. in the Harry I. Brown Auditorium of the library.
Matthew Downs, the guest speaker on the Feb. 1 edition, is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences as well as an Associate Professor of History at the University of Mobile.
Downs will be speaking on the topic of “The Tennessee Valley Authority and Regional Development in North Alabama, 1933-1960.”
This presentation will trace the Tennessee Valley Authority’s work during the Great Depression, showing how the project reshaped and revitalized the economy and, in the process, forced southerners to rethink their attitudes about the federal government.
Doors to the Brown Bag Lecture Series will open at 11:30 a.m.
Participants are encourage to bring their own sandwich for lunch. The library will provide bottled water, and Hickory Street Cafe will provide a prepackaged dessert at the door.
