SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The LifeSaver emergency air medical program will celebrate 45 years of service to Alabama communities with a special anniversary event on Wednesday, May 13 at its Sylacauga base.
The event, scheduled from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the LifeSaver 4 base at Sylacauga Municipal Airport, will bring together crews and leadership from the program’s bases in Sylacauga, Cusseta, and Evergreen.
Dr. Robert Carraway, founder of the LifeSaver program, is expected to speak about the history and future of air medical care. Air Methods Medical Director and University of Alabama Medical School Associate Professor Dr. Will Ferguson will also provide remarks.
Former patients Amber Rickels and Collin Long are expected to share their experiences with the service. Long was transported by LifeSaver after suffering a head injury in a side-by-side accident near Cusseta.
LifeSaver helicopters operate as flying intensive care units staffed by specially trained clinicians who provide emergency treatment for trauma, strokes, cardiac events, and other critical conditions. Crews also carry blood products that can be administered during transport.
A barbecue lunch will be served during the event. While not open to the public, media representatives are invited to attend and tour the aircraft, pending service availability.
