SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. – Sunday afternoon, April 2, a Lifesaver 4 medical assistance helicopter from Sylacauga crashed in Shelby County, tragically killing two people on board and leaving the third in critical condition.

At around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, a Lifesaver 4 helicopter was responding to a medical emergency regarding a hiker. Shelby County 911 determined that the hiker needed to be transported via Lifesaver.

En route to assist the hiker, the helicopter crashed on Bear Creek Rd. near Mountain Oaks Dr. as it attempted to land in Shelby County.

Highway Patrol Division officers of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies were the first to arrive on scene.

The Lifesaver 4 helicopter consisted of three crew members: pilot Marc Gann, EMS nurse Adam Russell, and flight paramedic Amanda Daniels.

Gann, of Sylacauga, was pronounced dead at the scene. Russell, of Goodwater, was taken to a local hospital where he later passed away.

Daniels remains in critical condition, but she is expected to recover.

The National Transportation Safety Board, with assistance from the Federal Aviation Administration, has announced that a full investigation will be conducted to determine the cause of the crash.
