FAYETTEVILLE, Ala. – Fayetteville High School senior Lauren Cook is taking the next step in her softball career after signing a scholarship on Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 4, to continue playing at Southern Union State Community College.

Cook, a standout for the Lady Wolves, primarily plays pitcher but will also have an opportunity to contribute as a utility player at the collegiate level.

“This day means everything to me. It’s something I definitely dreamed of as a little girl, and it’s really heartwarming to see that my hard work and dedication is paying off,” Cook said.

Although Cook also considered Bevill State Community College during the recruiting process, she said her heart was with Southern Union. A major factor in her decision was Southern Union head softball coach Brandon Cobb, whom Cook identified as the biggest draw throughout the process.

When evaluating her own game, Cook said her greatest strength is her heart and her determination to keep going regardless of the circumstances.

“I think with the help of people around me, the sky’s the limit,” she said.

Cook plans to major in business and earn a bachelor’s degree before attending law school. Her ultimate goal is to become a lawyer.

Before beginning that next chapter, however, Cook has unfinished business with the Lady Wolves. Her top priority for her senior season is helping Fayetteville reach the state finals. The team has come close over the past two seasons, falling just short at the regional level.

“That is my number one goal, but also to leave my mark as a leader,” Cook said.

Cook also offered advice to teammates who hope to follow a similar path and continue their playing careers beyond high school.

“Work hard, be patient, listen to your coaches. If you think you’ve worked hard enough, work harder,” she said.

During the signing ceremony, Cook thanked everyone who attended and gave special recognition to her mother, father, and brother for the support and encouragement they have provided throughout her journey.
