CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – The Childersburg City Council approved a resolution on Tuesday, June 2, authorizing an agreement with the Alabama Department of Transportation for a grant-funded project to pave an unfinished access road in the Childersburg Industrial Park.
Resolution 2026-16 approves the agreement with ALDOT for the project, which will convert the existing gravel road into a paved roadway.
“We’ve been working on this project for quite a while now,” Mayor Ken Wesson said. “This is an important step in providing for the road needs of expanding local industries.”
The $3.29 million project is being funded through an industrial access grant from ALDOT. Construction is expected to begin in August and will provide improved access for expansion projects at Cooper Steel South and Blair Block/SuperRock.
Council members also approved Resolution 2026-15, which allocates $7,922 for one-time lump-sum payments to eligible city retirees as authorized under Act 2026-608.
In other business, the council approved a $5,000 partnership contribution to the Childersburg Area Chamber of Commerce for the “Stars Over Childersburg” event, scheduled for Friday, July 3 in the downtown area. The funding will be used to support the event’s fireworks display.
The council also approved three personnel actions within the Childersburg Fire Department. Patrick Baggett was reclassified from full-time fire medic to part-time temporary status with no change in pay. Layton Kent and Walker Russell were reclassified from part-time temporary firefighters to full-time permanent firefighters, also with no change in pay.
The council approved payment of invoices totaling $106,180.97.
The next regular meeting of the Childersburg City Council is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 16. A work session will precede the meeting at 10:30 a.m.
