ALEXANDER CITY, Ala. – Central Alabama Community College, in partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama and the National Fitness Campaign, held a groundbreaking on Friday, July 18 for a new outdoor fitness court on its Alexander City campus.
The project aims to expand free access to high-quality workouts and promote wellness across the region. Developed with support from the City of Alexander City and Tallapoosa County, the open-air gym will feature seven exercise stations designed for bodyweight training and is accessible to adults of all fitness levels, ages 14 and up.
“Coming together to promote initiatives in our community is imperative,” said Alexander City Mayor Woody Baird. “This project is a win for Alexander City. Anytime we can support health, community involvement, and education in one space, it’s worth celebrating.”
The fitness court also integrates a free mobile app, offering users personalized training and guided workouts to enhance the on-site experience.
“This project is another way we’re working to support both education and community health,” Central Alabama Community College President Jeff Lynn said. “We want our campuses to be places that encourage wellness, connection, and opportunity. This partnership gives our students and local residents a new resource they can use every day.”
Central Alabama Community College is one of more than 20 Alabama partners joining the national effort led by the San Francisco-based National Fitness Campaign to bring outdoor wellness hubs to communities across the country.
“It’s always good to see investment in both people and place,” stated Tallapoosa County Commissioner Steve Robinson. “This will be something that benefits every generation, and it shows what happens when local leaders work together to create access and opportunity for the community. Wellness matters.”
The fitness court is expected to be completed later this year, offering students and local residents a new, free option for healthy living.
