DECATUR, Ala. – Lenette Calvin, a teaching and coaching legend in Sylacauga and Decatur who spent decades teaching gymnastics, cheerleading, and life lessons to thousands of young women, died Sunday, July 12. She was 97.
Calvin died just weeks before her 98th birthday. She was born Aug. 4, 1928.
Alongside her late husband, football coaching icon Tom Calvin, she made history as part of the only husband-and-wife duo inducted into the Alabama High School Sports Hall of Fame.
Calvin compiled a coaching career that spanned more than 60 years, primarily at Sylacauga High School and Austin High School in Decatur. She also operated a chain of private girls gymnastics clinics known as Calvin’s Twisters.
Through her work as an educator and coach, Calvin had a multigenerational impact on girls sports across Alabama, helping shape the lives of thousands of young athletes.
