ROCKFORD, Ala. – Environmental advocates are urging Coosa County residents to learn more about a proposed graphite mining project and participate in the federal public comment process before a key July deadline.

Coosa Riverkeeper will host a Graphite Mine Town Meeting from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, July 20 at the Rockford E-911 building. A free breakfast will be provided. Additional information is available at CoosaRiver.org/Graphite.

According to organizers, Westwater Resources has acquired 42,000 acres of mineral rights in Coosa County and is preparing plans for an open-pit graphite mine. The project would be located within a region containing graphite deposits used in electric vehicle battery production.

Coosa Riverkeeper contends the proposed mine could affect Weogufka Creek, Noneless Creek, and Lake Mitchell, as well as wildlife habitat, hunting opportunities on the Coosa Wildlife Management Area, and the overall quality of life in the area. The organization also cites concerns about the potential for acid mine drainage.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is accepting public comments on the project through Sunday, July 26. Environmental advocates are encouraging residents to submit comment letters, request a public hearing, seek an extension of the comment period, and call for a full Environmental Impact Statement.

Supporters say public participation is critical to protecting Coosa County’s waterways, forests, and natural resources.
