Failing wells and lack of access to the community water system troubles Sycamore residents

SYCAMORE, Ala. – Residents along Old Cemetery Rd. in Sycamore are dealing with failing wells and a lack of access to the Sycamore Water Authority system.

Many homes in the area have relied on private wells for years. However, as those wells continue to fail or collapse, residents say they have struggled to get help from officials they hope can address the issue.

James Vandergrift, a spokesperson for the residents, said the problem has persisted for years, with only temporary fixes that have failed to provide a long-term solution.

“We don’t have running water to be able to cook or do anything like that,” Vandergrift said.

Simple tasks such as cleaning, bathing, and cooking have become daily challenges, forcing some residents to haul water or rely on family members for basic necessities.

“It’s a tough problem for too many of us, but I especially worry about our elderly neighbors,” Vandergrift said.
