SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The National Weather Service forecast office in Birmingham has issued a winter weather advisory effective from 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 2, through 3:00 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 3.

Cold air will move into the region this afternoon, with rain mainly after 3:00 p.m. transitioning to snow in portions of north-central Alabama. Accumulation of up to two inches is possible in higher elevations, although the Sylacauga area should expect little or no snow.

The advisory covers Calhoun, Cleburne, Pickens, Tuscaloosa, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair, Talladega, and Clay counties, including the cities of Anniston, Heflin, Carrollton, Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Hoover, Columbiana, Pelham, Alabaster, Pell City, Moody, Talladega, Sylacauga, and Ashland.

Plan on slippery and icy road conditions in some areas. Slow down and use caution while traveling.

No hazardous weather is expected for the rest of the week beginning Monday, but it will be cold.

According to the weather service, a system will quickly develop today across the south and southeastern United States with severe thunderstorms before becoming a winter storm late tonight into Monday from the southern Appalachians into the mid-Atlantic.
