[WATCH] Sylacauga City Council work session and meeting – Aug. 3, 2021

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Sylacauga’s City Council met Tuesday night for its regularly scheduled meeting.

During the meeting, mayor Heigl and the City Council recognized KidGym Gymnastics for their stellar showing at the AAU National Gymnastics competition.

The council also took action on the following items:

  • Public hearing to consider amendment to Zoning Ordinance #2224A-20 as recommended by the Planning Commission. (Public hearing set by Resolution 62-2021 June 3, 2021).  Ordinance 2235-21 required.
  • Recognition of Sylacauga P/Rec Gymnastics Team that attended national competition in Savannah, Georgia June 23-27, 2021.
  • Approved the action necessary to contract with Sylacauga City Schools for the use of SPD K-9 for substance awareness and detection services from August 2021, through May, 2022.
  • Took the action necessary to approve the application for 050 Retail Beer (Off Premises Only) and 070 Retail Table Wine (Off Premises Only) from Family Dollar Stores of Alabama, LLC, DBA Family Dollar Store 20405 located at 20 North Broadway Ave. Council can waive two-week waiting period; Police report received.
  • Approved the action necessary to issue refund of $50 to SPR-Inc. DBA Ameri-Tek for overpayment of 2021 business license fees.
  • Approved the action necessary to authorize the Sylacauga Historical Commission to apply for the Alabama Historical Commission’s 2022 Historic Sites Grant to repair markers and replace fencing at the Sylacauga Cemetery.
  • Approved the action necessary to amend Section 9.4.1.2. Accrual of Vacation Leave of the COS Personnel Policies and Procedures Manual.
  • Approved training expenses for Jayne McGee to participate in the AAPPA Overview of Public Personnel Administration virtual classes on Sept. 30-Oct. 1, 2021.  Registration fee of $270.  Total expenses for McGee are $270.00.
  • Approved travel/training expenses for PD Officer William Taylor to attend Highway Vehicle Stops and the Drug Trafficker training in Birmingham Sept. 28-30, 2021.  No registration fee.  Expenses for meals will be incurred, along with use of a city-provided vehicle.
  • Approved travel/training expenses for Court Clerk Amber Johns and Magistrate Portia Ford to attend the 2021 AMCCMA Annual Conference in Orange Beach September 22-26, 2021.  Registration fee of $370/each.  Additional expenses for mileage, meals, and lodging will be incurred.  Total estimated expenses for Johns and Ford are $1,588.12/each.
  • Approved action necessary to authorize EDT to seek bids for the demolition of swimming pool and construction of the new splash pad (3-2 vote).
  • Approved action necessary to amend contract authorizing 40% payment to Tag Grinding Services upon completion of grinding services, with 60% balance due upon completion of hauling off debris.
  • Took action necessary to approve accounts payable received to date for July in the amount of $439,670.04.
