Increased SPD presence due to ‘Operation Southern Shield’

SHARE NOW

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – This week you may have noticed an increase in presence from the Sylacauga Police Department.

According to SPD Chief Kelley Johnson, your eyes are not deceiving you. This week there have been more on-duty officers than normal.

Why?

Operation Southern Shield.

This is a coordinated speed crackdown by State Troopers and local officers across five southern states including Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Johnson told SylacaugaNews.com SPD received a last minute grant through ADECA on Monday to be used for patrolling Sylacauga streets, and the officers are out in full force.

“Speed kills,” Alabama Law Enforcement Secretary Hal Taylor said in a statement. “We are pleased to partner with our neighboring states and local law enforcement agencies in an effort to save lives.”

The enforcement period began Monday and will go through July 21.
