CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – At approximately 11:35 a.m. today, the Childersburg Fire and Police Departments were dispatched to the Coosa River Bridge that creates the border of Talladega and Shelby counties for an adult male who jumped 80+ feet off the middle off the bridge.
Harpersville Police and Fire were requested for mutual aid as well. Upon arrival, with help of eye witnesses, first responders spotted an adult male approximately 20-30 years of age floating on his back near the middle of the river. Two firefighters with life jackets entered the water from the southeast river bank and swam towards the middle of the Coosa River and retrieved the male who was in severe pain and nearly submerged.
Once back at the river bank the patient was hoisted up a ladder with assistance from Childersburg Police and Fire crews as well as Harpersville Police and Fire Departments to the southeast riverbank where treatment was rendered by Childersburg medics.
The patient was conscious and communicating with medics where ultimately he was transferred to Lifesaver Helicopter and was transported to UAB.
