SHELBY COUNTY, Ala. – On Tuesday, Jan. 28, a deadly standoff occurred in Shelby County. Two men – a father and son – were found dead inside a residence on the 200 block of The Narrows subdivision.
The standoff began after officers arrived to serve a mental pickup order on an older man who would not answer the door. Shots were fired during the incident, but no deputies were injured.
An alert was sent out to more than 400 residents in the Narrows neighborhood asking them to shelter in place during the ordeal, which began around 8:30 a.m.
During a news conference, Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego said, “The incident began as an eviction and court mandated mental pickup order for an older man in his seventies.”
Drones were eventually sent into the home to clear the area and identified a man sitting in a recliner in the living room of the home that was unresponsive to authorities. Later, another drone located the man who was now lying on a bed in the bedroom.
Samaniego noted this man who authorities had been engaging with was not the initial subject of the court order.
That 48-year-old man was found dead from a gunshot wound in the bedroom. His father, who was the subject of the initial response to the home, was dead in a bathtub. Sheriff John Samaniego said it appears he had been dead for months.
