SYLACAUGA, Ala. – After more than 28 years in public education, Sylacauga City Schools Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller has announced her retirement, effective Feb. 1, 2027.
Eller’s career has included roles in five school systems, ranging from classroom teacher to superintendent. Throughout her career, she has emphasized the importance of relationships, collaboration, and creating opportunities for students to succeed.
“We want to thank Superintendent Dr. Michele Eller for her years of dedicated service to Sylacauga City Schools and for the tremendous commitment she has shown to our students, teachers, administrators, and families,” Board President Olwyn Twymon said. “Her leadership has helped strengthen our school system and expand opportunities for our students, and the impact of that work will continue to be felt for years to come.”
Twymon said the school system will remain focused on maintaining stability and building on the work established during Eller’s tenure.
Dr. Eller said her approach to leadership has always centered on people.
“I have always believed that relationships are at the heart of leadership,” she said. “When you take the time to know people – their strengths, their challenges, their personalities, and what motivates them – you build the trust necessary to accomplish great things together.”
During her tenure in Sylacauga, Dr. Eller helped lead efforts aimed at improving student achievement while expanding academic, extracurricular, and career opportunities. Student achievement increased during her tenure, as reflected in a significant improvement in the school system’s report card.
Her administration also oversaw investments in school facilities, safety, and learning environments. Those improvements included secure vestibules and upgrades to athletic and fine arts facilities, including the gymnasium, track, football field, field house, band room, show choir space, and black box theater.
Dr. Eller’s leadership also focused on supporting students beyond academics. The school system implemented and expanded a Multi-Tiered System of Supports, or MTSS, that included mental health services.
Career and technical education pathways, fine arts opportunities, STEM initiatives, robotics teams, Advanced Placement courses, and dual enrollment opportunities were also expanded, giving students additional ways to explore their interests and prepare for life after high school.
Supporting teachers and staff was another priority. Professional development opportunities, including LETRS, TOPS, classroom management, and Conscious Discipline, were expanded to help educators meet the changing needs of students.
Communication with families and the community also became a focus under Dr. Eller’s leadership. New and expanded communication tools included digital signage, ParentSquare, Alpha Alert, the Midweek Minute podcast, and a monthly newsletter highlighting school activities and achievements.
Throughout her career, Dr. Eller has described the superintendent’s role as more than overseeing day-to-day operations. She has sought to build partnerships among educators, families, students, elected officials, businesses, civic organizations, and community members.
Her leadership philosophy has emphasized transparency, consistency, honesty, high expectations, and collaboration, while stressing that improving student achievement is a shared responsibility.
“There is never a perfect time to leave something you love,” Dr. Eller said, “but there comes a time when you recognize that you have given your heart, your energy, and your very best to the work – and it is time to begin a new chapter.”
For Dr. Eller, that chapter will begin with retirement and gratitude for the students, teachers, staff, families, community members, colleagues, and mentors who have shaped her career.
Her legacy in Sylacauga City Schools will include improvements in student achievement, facilities, programs, and communication, but Dr. Eller said the most meaningful part of her work has always been the people she encountered along the way.
After more than two decades devoted to public education, Dr. Eller is preparing to close one chapter and begin another – carrying with her the memories of a career centered on service, relationships, and helping students discover their potential.
