ALPINE, Ala. – Winterboro High School is mourning the loss of senior Kenny Simmons, a standout athlete who died early Monday, Sept. 1.
Simmons, who competed in football and track and field for the Bulldogs, passed away just after midnight on Labor Day. Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy said the cause of death remains under investigation but no foul play is suspected.
Simmons “fought hard for his life,” according to a post made on Facebook by his father James Simmons, before succumbing to his injuries at UAB Hospital. He was remembered as a beloved student whose presence made others smile.
“It is with broken hearts that we share the devastating news of the loss of one of our beloved students, Kenny Simmons, a cherished senior and dedicated athlete,” Winterboro High School said in a statement. “His kindness, laughter, and kind spirit has left a lasting impact on our students, faculty, and the community.”
On Monday morning, Simmons’ classmates gathered at the school to grieve together. Administrators said grief counselors will be available Tuesday morning, Sept. 2, for any student needing support.
The school said Simmons’ memory and legacy “will forever be honored.”
