SYLACAUGA, Ala. – The Sylacauga City Council met Tuesday, June 18. The work session began at 5:00 p.m., and the regular meeting followed at 6:00 p.m.
At the meeting, the city council permanently appointed Attorney Austin B. Smith as Public Defender for the City of Sylacauga.
The council authorized the Early Pay-Off of 2013 – A General Obligation Warrant for City Hall Energy Performance with TRUIST totaling $693,282.49. (Increases $48.94 per day after June 20, 2024, Paid from Bond & Interest Account)
They also authorized the Engagement with underwriter Piper Sandler for Potential General Obligation Warrant Issue.
Mayor Jim Heigl was authorized to execute an agreement with East Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission related to FY25 funding totaling $91,015 for transit services for “Section 5311 Non-Urbanized Area Public Transportation” managed and operated by Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement on behalf of the City of Sylacauga.
Additionally, authorization was granted to Mayor Heigl to enter into Phase 2: Basic Services with Williams Blackstock Architects.
Ray and Gilliland, P.C. was approved to conduct to land surveys, the first at Area 1: Pool site located at corner of W 8th St. and N Norton Ave. totaling $2,200, and the other at Area 2: property bordered by Central Ave., Hwy 21, 10th St. and Norton Ave. totaling $9,500. (Both are paid for through the General Fund.)
Approval was given to hire Melody Salter as a consulter to advise and assist with administrative and financial related items as necessary, effective June 20, 2024 until Sept. 30, 2024. (Funding from unused salaries).
Heather Long was also hired for the position of Accounting Clerk at a rate of AFA-1, step-3 ($17.48), effective July 8, 2024.
The city council approved Michael Adair to join the Sylacauga Utilities Board for a term of six years ending July 2030.
Edward Gaspar and Taylor Pharr were reappointed to the Airport Authority, both to terms of six years ending in August 2030.
Charles “Chad” Joiner was appointed to the Sylacauga Health Care Authority for a term of six years ending August 2030, replacing Dr. Mamoun Pacha.
Jeff Turner (District 3) and Mitzi Smith (District 1) were both approved for the Nuisance Abatement Board. (Terms run concurrent with City Council.).
The council approved the Payroll for the month of June 2024 totaling $508,445.59 and the Fiscal Year 2024 Accounts Payable invoices totaling $203,373.52.
The next Sylacauga City Council meeting is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, July 2, at 6:00 p.m.
