SYLACAUGA, Ala. – On National Signing Day, Sylacauga baseball’s Jake Hammonds stuck with his commitment to play baseball for Lawson State Community College in Birmingham.
On Wednesday in the Sylacauga High School media center, Hammonds signed his national letter of intent to play for the Cougars for the next two years. The senior originally committed to the LSCC on Feb. 28.
Hammonds is traditionally a middle-infielder for the Aggies, but can also pitch if called upon.
“It was just the coaches and the atmosphere there,” said Hammonds of the Lawson State program. “The college is nice, and the coaches bring a great energy to practice everyday.”
“They’re getting a fierce competitor, a hard worker, and they’re getting a leader,” Sylacauga Head Coach Jeff Bell explained. “They’re getting an elite level baserunner, an elite level defender, and a guy that will probably hit in the top of their lineup.”
“That is a quality junior college program, and they send guys up to the next level,” said Bell. “It’ll be a short stay there, I think.”
