SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Think back on your 16th birthday. It was probably one of your favorite memories.
Now imagine having your 16th birthday spoiled by the Coronavirus. To most, sitting inside and social distancing does not scream “sweet sixteen,” but one Sylacauga family found a way to make a sour situation sweet.
Monday was Jake Hammonds’ 16th birthday – a milestone most teens count down the days to celebrate. However, the current pandemic left Jake, a student at SHS and a member of the SHS baseball team, with no way to celebrate like a 16-year-old normally would. Jake’s family, however, had other plans.
Last week Jake’s mother, Kathy, planned a surprise party in the most pandemic, social distancing way possible – a drive-by birthday party.
Nearly 30 cars lined up at Valley View Church to form a parade at 6:15. At 6:30, the cars filed through Valley View and Overhill Circle, while Jake, playing ball with a few friends in the driveway, had no idea what was coming.
As they drove by, friends and family tossed candy, presents and birthday money, truly making Jake’s 16th birthday one to remember. Take a look at the video below:
Jake’s friends and family also sent him short videos wishing him happy birthday.
Hopefully Jake had a sweet six-quaran-teen.
