SN: What is your full name?
JO: John Lloyd Offord
SN: What is your date of birth?
JO: July 1, 1947
SN: What was your rank?
JO: I was a Radioman 2nd Class, specifically a High-Speed Morse Code Operator.
SN: What was your branch of service?
JO: Navy
SN: What was your job?
JO: They needed people who were proficient in Morse Code to talk to the submarines.
SN: When did you serve?
JO: I served from 1970 through 1974.
SN: Where did you serve? Stateside or overseas?
JO: I stayed in Florida the whole time of my service
SN: What is something you remember most about your time serving?
JO: I learned to be focused and meticulous in my duties because it was very important.
SN: If you could say anything to those who want to serve, what would you tell them?
JO: I would say explore your options—see what you might be most interested in. I would advise anybody who doesn’t know what they want to do out of high school to explore service in the military. It gains you a lot of benefits, you do a lot of growing up, you’re given some responsibility and that teaches you a lot.
SN: Would you do it again if you could and why?
JO: I would, but I would have gone in right after high school.
Congratulations to John Offord, our Veteran of the Month for Jan. 2019.
