SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Each month, SylacaugaNews.com and Yea!106.5 feature a veteran online and on-air, honoring them for their service to our country. The Veteran of the Month for November is Donald “Frankie” Owens.

SN: What is your name?
FO: Donald “Frankie” Owens
SN: What is your date of birth?
FO: April 6, 1942
SN: What was your rank?
FO: E4
SN: What was your branch of service?
FO: Air Force
SN: What was your job?
FO: I was in charge of base supply.
SN: When did you serve?
FO: I went in in 1960 and got out in April 1966.
SN: Where did you serve? Stateside or overseas?
FO: Stateside. When I went in, if you could shoot a gun, they put you on a base defense team. I grew up hunting, so I could shoot, and I made expert. When the Bay of Pigs came along, there was about 50 of us put together for about 10 days, and we had an airplane that was going to take us. Luckily, we never had to go.
SN: What is something you remember most about your time serving?
FO: I brought my wife along with me. I met her in Phoenix, Arizona and we’ve been married for 55 years.
SN: If you could say anything to those who want to serve, what would you tell them?
FO: To say, “If I’m needed, I’ll be there.”
SN: Would you do it again if you could and why?
FO: Yes, I would. Anything for my country.
