[WATCH] Mayor Heigl declares September as Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month at Sylacauga City Council meeting

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – At Thursday night’s Sylacauga City Council meeting, Mayor Jim Heigl made the declaration of September being Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month.

After Mayor Heigl’s announcement, Talladega County Republican Party chairman Sondra Epperson, who is a gynecologic cancer survivor herself, accepted the declaration and noted multiple facts about the different types of gynecological cancer.

The following agenda items were also addressed at the meeting:

The city council approved the renewal agreement between Sylacauga PD K-9 and Sylacauga City Schools for substance awareness and detection services from August 2022 through May 2023 to provide ten half-day visits at a cost of $300 per visit.

The council accepted the FEMA Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) #EMW-2021-FG-03691 in the amount of $93,483.80 with a required local match of $4,674.20. Approval authorizes purchase of the Diesel Exhaust Extraction System from MagneGrip through the HGAC Purchasing Cooperative at a cost of $98,127.

They reappointed Lewis Robinson to the Library Board for the four-year term which will expire October 2026.

Also, the council approved 050 Retail Beer (Off Premises Only) and 070 Retail Table Wine (Off Premises Only) application from Circle K Stores, Inc., DBA Circle K Store 2706479 located at 42675 US Hwy 280. PD report complete.

They authorized the payment to NextSite LLC of $9,995 for success fee earned for the TidalWave new development recruited and completed.

The Sylacauga City Council approved travel and training expenses for Court Clerk Amber Johns to attend the 2022 AMCCMA annual conference in Orange Beach, Sept. 21-24, 2022. Registration and lodging expenses to be paid by AMCCMA; expenses for meals and mileage will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Johns are $431.25.

The council approved training for PD Officer Angela Tait to attend the Alabama Traffic Incident Management Workshop in Clanton, Sept. 8, 2022. No registration fee and no expenses will be incurred.

They approved training expenses for HR Specialist Jayne McGee to take the virtual FLSA, FMLA, USERRA, and other DOL Laws course, Sept. 15-16, 2022. Registration fee of $270. No additional expenses will be incurred.

They also approved travel and training expenses for PD Officer Josh Morris and Investigator Ben Layton to attend the ROCIC 31st Annual Homicide Conference in Mobile, Sept. 25-28, 2022. Registration fee is $150 per employee. Additional expenses for lodging, meals, and fuel will be incurred. Estimated expenses for Morris are $856.32; for Layton, $1,116.32.

Additionally, they approved travel and training expenses for Fire Inspector Chad Toland to attend the Alabama Asbestos Inspector Initial Training Course in Tuscaloosa, Oct. 2-5, 2022. Registration fee of $595; additional expenses for lodging, meals, and fuel reimbursement will be incurred. Total estimated expenses for Toland are $956.47.

The city council accepted the accounts payable invoices received for August in the amount of $518,813.10.

A work session was held prior to the meeting at 5:00 p.m.

The next convening of the Sylacauga City Council is scheduled to take place Tuesday, Sept. 20, at 6:00 p.m.
