[WATCH] Coosa Valley Medical Center’s Community Links shares referee’s cardiac emergency and community’s lifesaving response

SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Coosa Valley Medical Center hosted its Christmas edition of Community Links on Monday, Dec. 1, highlighting a local story of quick action, teamwork, and a holiday miracle.

The program at the B.B. Comer Memorial Library drew residents for lunch and a presentation focused on lifesaving response during cardiac emergencies. Tammy Coker, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner and Coosa Valley Medical Center hospitalist, led the session, offering practical guidance on recognizing warning signs of sudden cardiac arrest, performing bystander CPR, and using an AED when every second matters.

The event centered on the story of Joey Shelnut, a local football referee who suffered a sudden heart attack during a game earlier this year. Community members, medical staff, and bystanders acted swiftly, helping stabilize Shelnut until emergency crews arrived. Coosa Valley Medical Center officials said the response exemplified the community’s ability to come together when it matters most.

Shelnut attended as the program’s special guest, sharing his experience and expressing gratitude to those who aided him.

Attendees also enjoyed food and fellowship as Coosa Valley Medical Center encouraged residents to stay informed, stay healthy, and support one another throughout the winter months.
