SYLACAUGA, Ala. – A press release from the Sylacauga Police Department says that a Sunday, May 11 shooting incident turned deadly. On Monday, May 12, a male identified as 48-year old Christopher Cornell Keith, from Childersburg, passed away from his injuries at UAB Medical Center in Birmingham. The other victim was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Coosa Valley Medical Center.
The Sylacauga Police Department responded to the area of E 5th St. near N Louisville Ave. in reference to numerous gunshots fired Sunday. Officers arrived on the scene and located several shell casings in the roadway. That total rose to more than 20 shell casings from two weapons – likely a pistol and a rifle.
Officers on the E 5th St. scene received reports from Central Dispatch in reference to two males suffering from gunshot wounds on nearby Curran St., where officers located a vehicle with the two aforementioned males.
Police officers, along with deputies from the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office, provided first aid to the victims until units from the Sylacauga Ambulance Service arrived to transport the men to Coosa Valley Medical Center.
Following the shell casings, it is believed that the driver and his passenger were shot at repeatedly along E 5th St., between Louisville Ave. and Nashville Ave.
The Sylacauga Police Department, along with the Talladega County Drug and Violent Crime Task Force, are continuing to gather information related to this incident.
