SYLACAUGA, Ala. – Two Sylacauga Aggies have been recognized as part of the 2020 All-State soccer team.
The All-State team is selected by the Soccer Coaches Association. 2020 marks the fifth straight year Sylacauga has landed a player on the All-State team.
Sophomore midfielder Franklin Perez, who wears number seven, was named to the 2020 All-State Second Team. Junior goalkeeper Nathan Perry, who wears number double zero, was named as a 2020 All-State Honorable Mention.
The All-State Team is composed of 44 players split into two teams. Those players are selected from a pool of 1A-7A players across the state. 250 players were nominated for the team.
According to Sylacauga head soccer coach Billy Faircloth, 39 of the 44 players selected were seniors. Perez was one of the five underclassmen to be named to the team.
The season was cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but through 13 games, Perez scored 18 goals and assisted on nine others.
“It is important because it allows quality players to be recognized,” said Coach Billy Faircloth. “Some schools, such as in the Birmingham area, get more attention than we do, so this means the world. It truly shows the work ethic of our program and it provides valuable attention for the high school.”
Faircloth was also listed as one of the seven nominees for 1A-5A Coach of the Year. This was Faircloth’s third year as head coach of the Aggies.
