CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – Many lives were altered forever on Tuesday evening, Jan. 30, as two consecutive multi-vehicle wrecks unfolded on Hwy 280 between Sylacauga and Childersburg, leaving three dead at the scene and more injured.
At approximately 6:00 p.m., the Childersburg Police Department responded to a report of an automobile collision on Hwy 280 near Wood Rd.
In one of the impacted vehicles, three occupants were trapped, and one was ejected. Despite the valiant efforts of responders, two individuals succumbed to injuries.The other two were airlifted to UAB Hospital after the “Jaws of Life” were utilized.
The driver of the second vehicle was transported to UAB Hospital by Southeast Shelby Rescue.
Fifty minutes after the first wreck, around 6:50 p.m., a second accident occurred on Hwy 280 near Flag Pole Mountain Rd.
First Responders on the scene at the initial accident went down the road to the second wreck which was reported as a “vehicle versus log truck.”
Upon arrival, responders found that an SUV had collided with the backside of a log truck. The driver of the SUV was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Childersburg Police Department has issued thanks for the collaborative efforts of various agencies for their help, including the Sylacauga Ambulance Service, the Harpersville Fire Department, Southeast Shelby Rescue, Survival Flight, RAMS Medical Helicopter, the Sylacauga Fire Department, the Talladega County Sheriff’s Office, the Talladega County Coroner’s Office and Talladega County 911, in effectively managing the tragic scenes.
Investigations into both accidents are being conducted by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA).
