“Trish’s Treasures” remind us to honor the fallen soldiers this Memorial Day weekend

CHILDERSBURG, Ala. – It has become a great tradition for Childersburg First Lady Trish Wesson to gather a great group of volunteers to decorate the downtown area with the change of seasons and other special holiday times. They always come through to create a special environment, which is why they’ve been dubbed as “Trish’s Treasures.”

For the Memorial Day weekend, they’ve outdone themselves.

The gazebo at the corner of 1st St. and 9th Ave. features a memorial wreath created by Connie Nelson of Forget-Me-Not Flowers. Some of the windows have been painted with the reminder to honor our fallen soldiers, but this year, there are eight window displays that take the tribute to a special, personal level.

The City of Childersburg has eight downtown window displays of a Fallen Soldier‘s Table to honor eight brave Talladega County men who never made it home. They died in battle for our freedom, and the Fallen Soldier’s Table highlights the distinct difference between Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day in November.

With each Fallen Soldier’s Table, there is a personal display featuring information on one of the eight chosen for this year’s remembrance. There were others, too many from right here in our backyard. We thank them all for our freedom, as they made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation and its people.

The photos through plate glass downtown windows don’t do them justice. So, we urge you to take a stroll down the street, taking a moment to reflect on these brave men who died in service to our great nation.

When you run into one of “Trish’s Treasures,” thank them for their contributions to our downtown throughout the year.

This month, they are Trish Wesson, Glenda Holmes, and the city crews from the Street Department led by Robin Cobb and Parks and Recreation led by Brad Logan.

Thank you, Steve Yarnell, for hanging our flags.

Donnie Haynes, thank you for helping with research and contacting the precious families of the featured Fallen Soldiers.

Also, thanks to the amazing contributions from Lauren Guy and The Print Shop, as well as Misti Payne’s window painting.

Special thanks also go to Chad Pearson, Judy Rochelle, Monty and Gaye Powell, and the City for allowing your buildings to display the Fallen Soldier’s Table and tributes.

By all means, celebrate the holiday with friends and family, but take a few moments to reflect on those brave soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom!
